Strength training is required to help develop a “base” from which an athlete can build upon and become faster. Strength is required before power training and it helps to lay the foundation for overall body conditioning. I have found that strength is the single most dominant factor in predicting and also improving speed. It is not the only factor but it is definitely the main one that can bring about the most significant results.

If you have not performed a regular strength training program before then you need to participate in a general total body program as this will lay the foundation for a more advanced speed program. This article assumes that you have already been involved in a strength training program and are ready to expand into the specifics of training for blazing speed.

There are various types of strength which will help you to understand how to specifically train for your sport of tennis.

Strength-endurance refers to the athlete being able to exert strength over and over many times. If an athlete lacks the ability to continually exert this strength then they will become slower in reacting to a certain situation. The best way to work on strength endurance is by performing circuit training.

Maximum strength refers to being able to exert the maximum force possible in a single contraction or movement. It is this type of strength that plays a significant role in developing that “explosive” component of speed. An athlete can work on this maximum strength by conducting a strength training program.

Elastic strength is a third type which refers to the athlete having the ability to overcome a significant force or resistance with a fast contraction. How does this relate to speed? Well, think about how soccer has become more physical or football with the known amount of sheer strength required to push away from a defender. This can help the athlete to become faster in their response to a situation and get a jump on their opponent. This contributes to an athlete being fast and responsive to a certain situation. An athlete can work on developing elastic strength by working with medicine ball, performing various weight training exercises and a series of plyometric exercises.

Precautions for strength training include conducting a complete “needs analysis” for each individual, avoiding excessive loads on the body, avoiding over training (leads to overuse injuries)and avoiding training errors and using poor technique. Be sure to follow all guidelines and train with a partner if possible (for motivation and for spotting)

Principles of Training include the following: Frequency is how often you workout, intensity is how hard you work out or the effort you put into your work. This is expressed as a percentage of 1RM (maximum repetition). Time is how long you work out for(e.g. 45 minutes).Progression refers to a gradual increase in repetitions, sets, or resistance that allows for adaptational changes. Specificity is about training the body part or system specific to those used in your sport.

If you have access to a gym facility then you can develop a strength training program utilizing the equipment available.For those coaches or athletes who do not have access to a gym, you can design a program using a combination of the exercises included using an athlete’s own body weight for resistance.

Make sure that you include a variety of exercises that cover the lower body, the core and the upper body. Neglecting one area can create imbalances that will likely lead to injury.

How Do We Get Stronger? We get stronger by continually overloading the muscle and forcing it to grow stronger in order to cope with this increased load. When you hear coaches talking about a “maintenance phase” during their competitive season then they are often referring to maintaining the load placed upon the muscles. Whereas as during the pre-season the athletes were constantly striving to increase the loads placed on the muscles.

There are several methods when it comes to basic strength training. These include free weights such as barbells and dumbbells which are common in gyms and homes, using fixed machines such as universal machines, using your own body weight for resistance such as performing push-ups and squats, partner assisted exercises where your partner is the resistance, various forms of circuit training which involves performing a series of pre-defined exercises in rapid succession.

These are methods used for general strength training especially when the athlete lacks the appropriate resources. Our strength training exercises are more specific and cover a variety of methods but all aim to train specifically for the demands of tennis.

Many tennis players have to travel and this is where having the option to perform exercises using your own body weight can come in handy if this is your only option for strength training.

Repetitions - When conducting your initial strength training program for overall body conditioning and preparation for more advanced exercises I want you to work in the 10-12 repetition range. This allows you to develop muscle size and endurance but most of all it doesn’t place too much stress on your body which would likely lead to injury. You should be pushing out that last repetition, if not then increase the weight.

Once you have completed at least six months of a general weight training program then you can move onto the specifics that will really help you to become faster.

To achieve maximal results and adaptations you will want to train in the repetition range of 6-8 repetitions. This will help to achieve maximum strength and muscle growth. Every two to three weeks I want you to include a heavy day in your training which will consist of performing the same exercises but now in the 4-6 repetition range. It is important to perform these fewer repetitions with exercises that you have been doing for a while. This is a gradual progression. These heavy days will really help to overload and stimulate the muscles.

Sets - During your initial general strength training program I want you to perform 3 sets. The goal should be to push out 10-12 repetitions in each of these three sets. Remember that the main goal of a general strength training program is to prepare the body for the more strenuous activities placed upon it in the power and advanced training programs. If you have already been involved in a strength training program then you need to move on to a more intensive strength training program of 3 to 5 sets per exercise (include super sets into your programs)

Rest periods - During your general conditioning phase you will want to only rest for 1-2 minutes between sets.

When you have moved on to the more intensive program you will need to increase your rest periods to at least two to three minutes (due to using heavier weights and performing fewer repetitions). Anything less when maxing out will not allow you to fully recover in order to perform the next set for maximal gains. This increased rest period will allow the muscles to sufficiently replenish their ATP and creatine phosphate stores which will allow you to get better results on your next set.

Many power athletes will require rest periods of greater than 3-5 minutes. This is more specific but I am sure that you will have time restraints with your sessions.

Strength Training Program for Novice Lifters includes using a lighter weight, more repetitions, goal of becoming accustomed to strength training, fewer sets, divide into two sessions (upper body and lower body), conduct each session twice per week = 4 total sessions

Strength Training Program for Advanced and Experienced Lifters includes heavier weight, fewer repetitions, goal is to increase strength, more sets, three distinct sessions allowing for more emphasis on a specific muscle group, minimum of 72 hours rest between same muscles group work out, push out last few repetitions, increase weight if they are too easy!Introduce super sets, complete one heavy training session every three weeks, increase rest period between sets.

With frequency you should try to aim for at least three sessions per week with a minimum of two sessions.

Choice of exercises: To maintain motivation and prevent boredom change the exercises every 4-6 weeks. Refer to the article “Need New Strength Training Exercises to Add Variety to Your Programs?

The choice of exercises may be determined by the equipment available to you. If you have access a gym then they should have all of the required equipment. If not, then choose some of the body-resistance exercises or stability ball exercises.

Include a super-setting program for a 6 week period. Super-setting is where you complete a set with one muscles group and then immediately perform a set with another muscle group. For example: complete one set of dumbbell curls for the biceps and then complete one set of triceps extensions for the opposing triceps.

I strongly believe in keeping the repetition range between 6-8 as anything higher is not “overloading” the muscles. Every 2-3 weeks I want you to include one session of maximum lifting where your repetition range is between 4-6 repetitions. This will help to stimulate the muscles.

Always use a spotter and seek the assistance of a trainer to help you with technique. Remember that this is a general strength training program and change exercises every 4 - 6 weeks for variety and to stimulate muscles. Perform the general program for at least 6 months and allow for 48 to 72 hours rest between workouts. Start with a light weight and then progress to heavier weights and aim for a designated number of repetitions.

Include the following strength and power training exercises in your program for advanced players: BB and DB squats, Snatch Squat, Power Cleans, Bench Press,
Hack Squats, Leg Sled.

Characteristics of Strength Training Programs
Hypertrophy involves concentric and eccentric exercises, multiple sets for each muscle group (greater than 3 sets, short rest periods (less than 2 minutes, repetition range of 6-12, include super setting (same or opposing muscle groups), use a variety of exercises per muscle group, focus on muscle being trained and start with the larger muscle groups first

Power involves multi-joint exercises (power cleans, multiple sets (greater than 4), longer rest periods greater than two minutes (need longer rest periods before next set), repetition range less than 6 per set, very high intensity (maximal effort), choose power exercises specific to the movements used in tennis, perform power exercises early on in a session (work assisting muscle groups second), power is similar to strength but you are adding the time factor, plyo-metrics are exercises where the muscle is contracted eccentrically and then immediately concentrically. Stretch shortening cycle.

Muscular Endurance involves tennis specific exercises, fewer sets (3 or less), moderate rest periods (2-3 minutes between sets), repetition range of 12-18, lower intensity (allows for more repetitions), lighter weights used for more repetitions,

Usually, newcomers to PPC make a common mistake they create an ad, then display that ad for hundreds, or maybe even thousands of different keywords. Then, to further insure failure, all keywords lead to the exact same landing page.

Here is a hypothetical example, Joe has a website thats all about the hobby of radio controlled model airplanes. On his website, he offers airplane kits, building supplies, radio transmitters and receivers, servo actuators, engines of all sizes, tires and wheels, just about everything thats related to model airplanes.

Joe decides to use PPC advertising to boost his sales, so he compiles a gigantic list of keywords. His list has several hundred keywords, all generally relating to radio controlled model airplanes. He works for hours creating what he thinks is the best ad he is ever seen. He is really proud of his new ad and surely, with his hundreds of keywords, he expects to see a big jump in sales.

Joe goes to his AdWords account and enables his new ad. Confident that he is done his best, he goes to lunch. While at lunch, he is contemplating all those new sales being made. He can hardly wait to get back to his PC and check the action.

Back at the office, Joe logs in to his AdWords account and his jaw hits the floor when he sees he has had no clicks. His ad has been displayed hundreds of times, but still no clicks. Then he notices that Google has disabled some of his keywords, telling him he has to increase his bid price to use those keywords. Joe raises his bid and his keywords are back in business.

A couple of hours later, he checks his account again and this time he does see that he is had some clicks. He is had 87 clicks so now he is confident everything is working. Joe checks his payment processor account to see how much money he is made, there are no new sales. Joe lets things run for a couple of days, but the results are the same. He is getting lots of clicks, but no sales.

By this time, Joe has spent over 800 dollars on clicks. Disgusted with the lack of sales, Joe cancels his AdWords account because PPC ads dont work.

Joe made several crucial errors. First of all, you dont want to use a single ad for hundreds of keywords. Some of Joes keywords were related to radio equipment, while others were related to construction kits and engines. All those keywords would trigger the exact same ad to be shown. If someone searches for a specific item, they are not likely to click on a generic, one size fits all ad thats just about model airplanes in general.

His next mistake was to raise his bid price to get more displays of his ads. Sure, more displays did mean that he started getting clicks, but those clicks did not do anything except cost him money. Those visitors may have originally searched for model airplane engines, but Joes ad took them to the home page of his site, not to a page related to engines. Most people wont waste time navigating around your website, trying to find the item that matches up to what they are actually searching for. They have already searched on Google, then they clicked on your ad, now you are telling them that they have to search even further to find what they are looking for. Thats it, they are gone in a flash.

To do things right, you should have your ad directly related to the keywords you are using. If your keywords are about model airplane engines, your ad should also be specifically about model airplane engines. And when someone clicks on your ad, you should send them directly to the page on your website thats about model airplane engines. Going this route will get you more clicks and more of those clicks will become sales.

Ideally, each keyword should have its own specific version of your ad and that ad should lead directly to the page on your website thats about that specific topic. Of course, this may not be practical, especially if you have hundreds or even thousands of keywords. But at the very least, you should group similar keywords together and connect them to an ad thats related to the group.

For example, if you have 164 keywords related to engines, you could write an ad specifically about engines and then connect that ad to the engines part of your website. Make it easy for the prospect to find exactly what they are looking for and you will be rewarded with more sales.

By preventing the elbow from bending naturally as you draw back on your shot is preventing you from taking a full wind-up and hence, by the time the club has made impact with the ball, the power generated won’t be as great as it would have been if the elbow bend wasn’t resisted.

The secret is to make sure your arms are flexible during the pre-swing period and to let the elbow bend naturally.

Overcoming Inflexibility

For older players, it’s not so much resisting the elbow bend which affects their ability to get distance but it’s more a matter of waning flexibility and diminishing power.

The older one gets the more the tendency is to hunch over. This only serves to restrict your turning ability thus affecting your power. Instead, practice standing straighter. Bending the knees ever so slightly, make sure your back is straight and you are bending forward until your club is in the contact position with the ball.

Practice this until you are comfortable with it and then take it to the practice range. The idea with this technique is to allow those older players who don’t quite possess the flexibility anymore, to be able to take a full golf swing at the ball without compromising their accuracy. The club will swing in a more vertical motion because of the straighter stance.

Yes, it may feel awkward at first but remember, it’s really only a minor adjustment in terms of the way you stand over the ball and shouldn’t present any problems in it’s correct execution.

The solution? Chip and run. Take a middle to lower iron out of your bag. Your club choice should reflect the severity of the rough, so for example if you’re in thick stuff a 9 or pitching wedge is the club to go for, but if your practically on the surface you might even like to try a 3-wood. Hold the club as normal and conduct a normal putting stroke through the ball, with the club you’ve chosen. Simply putt with the same weight as normal, at the same rhythm. With any luck the ball should pop up and trundle nicely towards the hole. This lifts the ball over the rough but keeps it close enough to the surface to give you the control you need for that added finesse around the putting surface.

Yet another connection could be made with your dog’s groomer. After all, she or he is in business to make dogs looks and feel good, and so are you! As you can see, your home business can become a resounding success simply by making a connection here and there.

Another example is that of the home business that does notary work. Notaries are in constant demand, since many business transactions have to be notarized. Sure, banks, law offices, and even some medical offices might have their own notaries, but what if someone gets sick?

What if a transaction did not originate in a local office, but instead took place via the Internet?
Getting the name of your home business out there is the connection you will need to make in order to be called in when there is a need!

For example, think of a way that your notary business is different from the way the notary at the local law office does business. Odds are, the law office’s notary is also a legal secretary, paralegal, or relief receptionist, and having her or him leave the office is next to impossible.

You, on the other hand, are free to travel to a signing, a client’s business, or even the courthouse. Make sure that you talk to the lawyer and the human resources manager at the local law firm and make that connection. After all, a home business connection is worth money!

As northern hemisphere holidaymakers gear up for the ski season knee clinics gear up for the avalanche of skiers soon to pile up at their door! Let’s look at the reasons why.

Firstly the altitude. Even in the towns at the base of the slopes it may take several days to acclimatise to the altitude. Ever woken up on your first morning to find your eyes puffy? At low atmospheric pressure fluid escapes out of the blood vessels and into the tissues. Yet holiday skiers often race straight onto the slopes, where the pressure is even lower and oxygen in shorter supply.

Next take dehydration. The fluid escaping into body tissues due to this low atmospheric pressure leaves the blood vessels dehydrated. Even the very air you are breathing is dry as precipitation sucks the fluid out of the atmosphere. Dehydration can drop your blood pressure, so now the brain is being fuelled with blood at a lower pressure and containing less oxygen. This can show as mild fatigue, slight dizziness and mild shortness of breath. It’s easy to just put this down to the bracing exercise, and decide to stop off at the top and heat up with a glass of mulled wine. Oops, alcohol on top of oxygen-hunger? Not good for the head, but not good for the leg muscles either.

So let’s look at the muscles. How often do you spend six hours a day with your knees bent five degrees? Well, you do when you are skiing. Your quads and hamstrings muscles are working overtime, using up their stored fuel and further compromised by their low blood pressure and oxygen deficit.

Now move onto ski bindings. Those who hire skis usually benefit from an expert technician adjusting the bindings according to the height and experience of the skier. People with their own skis may adjust the bindings themselves, and make sure that they are good and tight so that the skis don’t come off with every crash. Bindings are meant to come off when you crash, to save the torque stress being applied to the knees instead!

Lastly the snow. If only one could guarantee the every holiday will be blessed with good snow. With only a week’s holiday, it’s too bad if the snow is not optimal and holidaymakers have little option but to get out there on the slopes anyway.

Now we have the full recipe for a cruciate ligament disaster within the knee. Patchy snow with loads of bits to snare the ski on. Tight bindings to ensure that the torque of a twisted ski is transferred directly from the bindings to the cruciate ligaments inside the knee. Compromised quads and hamstrings muscles unable to protect the cruciates. All of a sudden a loud CRACK! There goes the anterior cruciate ligament and there goes the rest of the holiday!

My advice is this. If you want to enjoy the ski season book up for more than a week. Book into your local gym for a few sessions under supervision before you set off on your holiday. Then spend a couple of days acclimatising on the lower slopes and enjoying your mulled wine down there while your body rehydrates and your blood pressure adjusts to compensate for the low oxygen pressure. Your knees will be so grateful and those knee clinic back home will just have to settle back and wait for the football season!

Before you begin your akita training, be sure that you fully understand the exercise and commands you are about to teach your dog. Do not aim any teaching if you are in doubt. A lot of folks think that training akitas from takes loads of time but the true fact is that it does not take that much time at all. It does, however, take a lot of your and your dog’s patience.

Dog training opportunities are all around, where your dog is most comfortable. You will also find there is plenty time to communicate with your dog while completing the tasks and activities of your daily life.

The motivation for your akita to learn is praise delivered in a pleasant tone of voice, pack behaviour, food and games. Remember this throughout the whole akita training course.

Akita dogs do not understand our language, even though many owners assume they do. You can be sure that if akita seems to be making errors, the fault lies with the trainer who is not communicating the message clearly enough to the animal. When training a akita to do something, make sure that your voice is clear and your tone is firm.

When teaching, the dog may begin to lose interest, so get him to do an activity he likes and can achieve, praise him for it and finish training, play short game, and try again later in the day.

Never leave a long recall line on your dog when he is is left unattended. If the connection ring gets snagged and caught on object, the akita could get hurt.

Important japanese akita training tips point: be aware the different akitas dogs make progress in training at different rates. It is not material whether your dog learns quickly or slowly, as long as it does learn and changes for the propitious.

The training lessons should be short as possible. Start with 10 minutes at first and the gradually - if the akita is not loosing interest - extend the lessons. Many short are more useful then 1 long one.

Train when your akita is alert, because tired dogs or dogs which have just eaten don’t do well.

And the last one of akita training tips: avoid making repetitive commands. Dogs are not deafened or stupid. Repeating lay down 10 times does not help. Keeping silent between commands helps the akitas to differentiate between the sounds and understand what you want.
