If you have water damage at home due to severe storm, burst pipe, or roof leak, one of its possible aftermaths is mold growth. The question that immediately hits homeowners in such cases is if water damage resulting in mold growth will be reimbursed by their insurance.

Molds are microorganisms that belong to the same family as mushrooms and yeasts. Mold spores are present both outside and inside of your home, and wait only for the opportune condition to germinate. Molds can damage your possessions, structure of your home, and your health. They are considered allergens and can cause asthma attacks, lung infections, and can be harmful to people undergoing chemotherapy or HIV treatment.

Molds can grow where temperature is anywhere between 2 - 40 degree Celsius, where there’s an organic food supply (carpets, books, woods, etc), and where there’s moisture. In order to avoid mold, you have to dry water-damaged areas immediately. For insurance claims purposes, first you have to call your insurance carrier to report the water damage. Expect to answer a few questions such as: what is the source or cause of water damage? How did it occur? Are you reporting the incident right away for immediate cleanup and restoration?

Generally, insurance policies cover mold damage that is related to “insured loss” category. This simply means that the source of water intrusion, and therefore mold damage too, can be determined. What needs to be determined is if mold damage existed prior to water damage or a result of it.

For instance, if you already have a moldy basement and then a pipe bursts, only damages caused as a direct consequence of pipe burst will be covered, but not the damage caused by mold. Your insurance carrier will send an inspector to determine whether the mold is a direct result of water intrusion, or existed prior to it. An inspector can determine the age of mold— whether it is pre-existing, or recently developed.

If mold growth is not the outcome of water intrusion as specified by your insurance policy, the damage caused by mold will not be reimbursed by your insurance carrier.

If the cause of mold growth is ongoing or hidden water damage, the rule would be the same. Reimbursement of damage will be determined by nature of the policy itself (whether the cause of water intrusion is covered by the insurance or not), and by age of mold (whether it is pre-existing or not).

Whether mold damage is covered by your insurance policy or not, whether it exists prior to or after water damage, you should contact water restoration specialist right away for cleanup and molds removal. Depending on severity of mold infestation, you might be asked to leave immediate vicinity during mold remediation. Hiring professionals to do the necessary task for ensure that moisture problem in your home is properly corrected; that source of water damage will be repaired; and that drying of your home will be done speedily. It is highly advised that you contact water restoration services within 48 hours or less to prevent mold growth or worsening of mold infestation.

Topics: What, Every, Homeowner, Should, Know, About, Water, Damage, Restoration

Flood water is dirty no matter where it came from. So when your house or a part of your house is entered by water you have to act immediately in order to restore your property and put your life back to normal. Water damage restoration requires proper cleaning equipment that should be used in order to achieve proper cleaning efficiency. It also goes that you must take every precaution to do the work safely without endangering your health and personal safety.

Before making any plans on how to clean up your property, call your insurance provider and ask if they would honor your claim for the damage that happened within your home. Take pictures and list down all the affected items. If you have a video camera you could use that too, to record the aftermath of flooding that happened in your house.

After you have made all the necessary paper work, it is time to get to the gritty task of water damage restoration remediation. Prior to actual cleaning take care of your wounds or any skin lesions which you might have. Apply an antiseptic and put a waterproof medicated plaster over it. Use rubber gloves and rubber boots to protect your hands and feet from any infection you might acquire while doing water damage restoration activities.

The next thing you need would be to have a wet vacuum pump to remove water from your home. If you do not own any, you could rent it or borrow it from somebody you know who has one. Make sure to turn off the main electrical switch of your home before proceeding with removing the water to avoid any accidents in the form of electrocution or short circuits.

To make water damage restoration easier, remove or pump the water out at a moderate but regular pace. Work from the highest point and inner portions before tackling the lower and outer areas of your home. When the water has already been removed, begin taking out all items that were ruined by the flood water. Put these items in a dry and safe place, where you could sort it out later. Upon removing all said items, remove the carpet. Roll it and take it outside to drip.

Now that the floor is bare, use the wet vacuum pump once again to remove any underlying excess water. Then make a solution of warm water mixed with powder or liquid cleaning soap and brush it on all affected surfaces to remove grime, dirt and stains left by the water. When everything has been scrubbed clean, use clean tap water to rinse the soap residue out and preliminarily dry the area by wiping every surface with a clean cloth rag. Once this is finished, make a disinfecting solution by mixing two ounces of chlorine bleach with one gallon of water. Wipe or spray the disinfecting mixture on all surfaces and allow it to stand and seep into the materials. Any water damage restoration procedure requires that all contaminated areas are sanitized.

Now comes the drying phase of the water damage restoration process. Open all windows and air outlets to ventilate the place. You may also use fans to circulate the air. Use dehumidifiers to absorb excess moisture which would prevent molds from growing and causing problems later on. Make sure that everything is well dried before occupying or using them again.

Topics: Flood, Damage, Cleanup, For, Landscape, Trees

Floods have caused severe damage to homes and properties amounting to millions of dollars. Forests have also been affected with several trees uprooted by the strong current and washed away by the floods. These trees are not just saplings or small varieties common to suburban areas. Some of these trees have been in existence in hills, forests and mountains for several decades and have reached hundreds of feet in height. If the natural power of water can do that to hills and forests, what more can it do for landscape trees in neighborhoods and homes. Flood damage cleanup would also be necessary in such cases.

Trees are living organisms that adapt to the environment and their circumstances. Landscape trees that have survived flooding will also receive some sort of shock to their system, similar to what people experience when a wall of water comes rushing in to meet them. Flood damage cleanup is necessary to restore conditions for the tree and put its habitat back to normal. If these activities are not done, it can contribute to the eventual deterioration of the tree and would make it difficult for it to survive the coming years.

Trees, like others in the plant kingdom, are almost inanimate in its mobility and physical reaction to external stimuli like floods. It would also be slow to exhibit symptoms of distress as a reaction to flooding. However, experts have established some signs of distress on trees that makes flood damage cleanup an urgent necessity. The most common sign is the yellowing of leaves or chlorosis. Similar to anemia in humans, chlorosis is a condition in plants and trees that make them produce insufficient chlorophyll, or the basic material that makes plants green. Anemia in humans indicates poor health, and so does chlorosis in plants.

Other symptoms that indicate the need for flood damage cleanup is that leaves fall even when the size of leaves are small, which is not normal. An abundance of watersprouts and other growths is also another indication, and diebacks at the tree’s crown or top. Other indications of flood stress are the abundance of insect infestation that if uncorrected, can cause severe insect damage. Another indication is root rot, although this may be difficult to determine particularly if roots are not exposed.

Flood damage cleanup in trees include the removal of excess standing water at the base or at the roots. The roots of trees can only hold so much, and if submerged for a long time in floodwater, roots can also deteriorate and rot. Roots need oxygen for proper growth and excess floodwater can block air circulation to the roots. The same is true for excessive soil that has accumulated on the base or roots after the flood. It can also block oxygen, not only to the roots but to the microorganisms living in the soil that manages the nutrients necessary for good growth. The type of soil that has accumulated on the roots is also critical. Floodwater can bring along salinated soil. The extra sediments and salt can actually burn the roots and prohibit proper growth. Such indications require flood damage cleanup, including removal of standing water and excessive soil.

Proper care of trees is also necessary during flood damage cleanup of neighborhoods and communities affected by floods. A good environment can restore affected areas much faster, and bring normality to a community much quicker.

Topics: Preventing, Water, Damage, -, Your, Everyday, Checklist

Water damage, in itself, is costly because it results in losses. The value of lost items is sometimes, measured in financial terms; sometimes sentimental; sometimes, both. Restoring one’s home after a water-related disaster adds to the cost. What’s more it is laborious, and time-consuming. The best way to way avoid all of those is to protect your home from water damage.

Easy said, does it? But how does one lessen or completely eliminate the possibility of water damaging one’s home?

One of the common household reasons for water damage is leaks in plumbing system (sink, toilet, bathroom), and in roofs and walls. There are a number of reasons why homes develop leaks. Perhaps the material used is porous or of low-quality, or the splices were not sealed properly. Excessive humidity level and groundwater are also another common causes of water damage.

One way to do this is to regularly check your plumbing for signs of damage or break. One indication that your pipe needs to be repaired or replaced is if it shows any discoloration. Prevention is better than cure, as saying goes, and it applies just as well to home living. Fixing leak problems immediately at the smallest sign of it will save your property and save you money, time, and effort in the long run.

Check also your air conditioners and water heaters. If there are wet spots in the units, call a professional to check for problems with your heating and cooling units. Having your air conditioners and heaters checked by professional at least once a year will help them in good condition.

Regularly check your sump pumps to see if they are working well. Look for cracks in the walls outside building structure.

Inspect your roof for holes, breaks, or cracks in the shingles and for corrosion in roofing valleys. Check your ceiling for water stains and for cracks or damage in the chimney. Detecting and fixing minor problems will prevent roof leaks, and prevent you from spending big on major roof repair.

Regularly check your gutter and free it of leaves, twigs, and other debris. Make sure your downspout is also pointed away from your building.

Have a professional regularly check your humidifier as well. When days get humid, make sure your humidifier is working properly. Choose humidifiers that regulate humidity level automatically.

Another way to minimize water damage is to waterproof areas and materials inside your home. There are four basic types of waterproofing: surface waterproofing, integral waterproofing, hyrdrophanous waterproofing, and flexible waterproofing. Waterproofing, in its simplest definition, is the application of coating to prevent water from damaging a material. Some of the products used in waterproofing includes vinyl, and resins.

While natural disasters like hurricane and flooding cannot be prevented, some sources of water damage can be prevented. Roof leak, pipe leak and other plumbing problems, chimney drips, and other such problems are some household sources of water damage at home. Regularly checking leak-prone parts of your home and correcting the problems at their slightest sign will prevent occurrence of water damage. In turn, it will keep your home free from damages and keep you from spending on restoration costs.

Topics: What, You, Should, Know, About, The, Water, Damage, Restoration, Professional

The experience of having a flood-soaked room can be quite horrific. Floodwater does not really separate the items with sentimental value from those that do not have any. More than anything, it is the element of surprise that affects people the most. Because of the stress, homeowners usually find themselves stupefied by the situation.

Fortunately, there is such a thing as water damage restoration, which is the process of repairing the damage inflicted by the excess water. Even better is that water damage restoration does not have to be done alone. There are professionals or companies that offer water damage restoration services.

However, you should be warned of not letting the panic take over you. Some may be so concerned about remedying the problem that they forget that calling a crew for water damage restoration means that strangers will have the freedom to go in and out of your house. To avoid any kind of suspicion or fear when the crew arrives, there are certain pieces of information that you will need to know.

Know the particulars of the professionals.

The most basic thing that you need to know about the person you hired is his or her name. Not only an introduction the polite thing to do, but it also gives you something to identify the water damage restoration professional with. After all, names are there to distinguish each other from the rest of society. It is also a good idea for you to ask to see an identification card before welcoming the professional in. This will let you check if they are who they purport to be.

It is not a matter of being overly suspicious. These are legitimate questions to ask anyone before letting them into your home. Remember that no matter how trustworthy they may seem you can never be too sure.

Ask for the company address and contact numbers.

The water damage restoration company that you hire to conduct the cleanup should of course be legitimate. One of the ways that you will be able to separate those who are credible from those who aren’t is through the state of their office. At the very least, you should know about where their headquarters is located. That way, you know where to go in case you have any complaints on the water damage restoration done in your property.

This does not mean however, that those companies without an office are not to be trusted. What it does is provide a clue as to how seriously the person you called in takes his or her craft. If they don’t care enough to have an office where they can entertain clients, then it is probably a wise idea to look somewhere else.

Know about the track record

You should also ask the professional the extent of his or her experience. This will tell you about the quality you can expect from that person. One with less experience is obviously someone who may still need the practice to do the job right. As a homeowner concerned about the state of your home, you obviously don’t want your emergency to be used a practice.

Topics: Mold, Removal, And, How, It, Is, Done

The basic thing about water in furniture, textiles, tiles, floors, carpet, cabinets and papers is that it causes mold build up. Once the thing has molds, it is on a clew that it is on its way to being damaged. Unless it can still be restored, you have to spend for replacement for items that was strained by the incident. But what if the thing where mold aggregation was of sentimental value? Or what if replacing the thing would cost you considerably this time such as replacement of tiles or floorings that were strained with mold? Surely, it would put you in the most unfavorable side. What you need to do then is to prevent molds to aggregate further in the things that were exposed to moist. One way to do this is to make certain that when essential things are strained by water, you must undergo mold removal.

The mold removal is necessary in areas that were soaked in water. It is essential that your household items are dry. However, there are circumstances where molds can build up in areas where they are not expected at all. It could be due to leaks, flooding, water alteration problems, qualifier flow and other possible causes where water is not really welcome. Areas that could be strained by these problems are ceiling, walls, floors, equipments and ducts where other essential things are also in place.

The mold removal should be met in cleaning the area where there is mold buildup. It is also about cleaning and ensuring that molds will not return. You can have two choices on these. Either you do it yourself, or call on professional help from companies who do mold removal. Whichever you choose, it is essential that you know the process of mold removal so that, you can judge for yourself that the things that was soaked in water or exposed in moisture is already innocuous to use. The most essential processes that you have to understand in mold removal are as follows:

1. Contain the mold. This means that cleaning up must involve a process that will stop the molds to broad out or affect other areas. If molds have shape up in the digit assets of the carpet for instance, you should clean it directly to prevent the molds from affecting other parts.

2. While containing the molds is what you have in mind, you need to kill the existing molds that have shaped up as this is one way to do so. This can be finished by using anti-mold detergent soap or cleaning agents. This must be applied and cleaned to meet in the assets where there are visible molds. Mold removal should be finished in the entire area or things that were under water alteration so that even the seemingly invisible molds are cleaned.

3. Killing them by soaps or detergents is not enough. Dead molds should be removed. Otherwise, the things that were clean cannot still be proclaimed innocuous to use. The process of removal could be scrubbing, vacuuming or drying. This is the ultimate ways in the mold removal process.

Once these processes are complete, you need to protect the things from another mold buildup. Protecting it means avoiding water damage. If inevitable, immediate salutation and cleanup should be given.

Topics: Flood, Damage, Cleanup, Guide, For, Your, Kitchen

Flood damage cleanup for kitchen should follow a high safety measure that is absent in cleaning up other areas of a house. Kitchen and basement are two areas of a house that carry higher risk for water logging. And kitchen is more sensitive area in a house than a basement considering proper cleaning, as it is the place where foods are cooked for human intake.

There are different reasons for water logging in a kitchen. A leaked drainage system or a leak pipe can cause severe water logging here. But in case of a flood damage cleanup the situation becomes grave rushing up the necessity for immediate and thorough attention. This happens because unlike leaked water from kitchen drainage pipe, the flood water carries bacteria, dirt, microorganisms with high risk of serious contamination of diseases. The sewage water of flood may also contain the animal wastes and cadavers making the water almost poisonous for human health. In such a condition flood damage cleanup for kitchen should be done with extra special care. And for this you must know about few intricate details beforehand.

Here is short but compact flood damage cleanup guide for your kitchen -
* Disconnect all types of electric connections. Put off all the switches, put out all the plugs from the sockets and disconnect the main connections.

* Bring out the valuable electronic kitchen appliances along with gas ovens, wood tables or other furniture.

* Dispose all food stuffs that lay exposed to the flood water. Check the canned foods thoroughly for any chance of water seeping inside. If in doubt, it is always better to dispose them. A drop of flood water can cause serious health troubles.
* If the floor is flooded with water, you can use water pumping machine to clear off water. Also try wet or dry vacuum cleaners to dry off the floor and other soaked areas of the kitchen.

* After this starts the real flood damage cleanup job. All types of kitchen utensils should be washed thoroughly in clean water and detergent. Use a solution of bleach and liquid detergent to fight against bacteria and other infectious diseases. Also detach every part of a kitchen utensil and wash them separately to save from presence of contaminated water in between different parts. For example, wash the cover, the handle and the pan separately if possible. And do not hurry; take your full time to do the job thoroughly.

* Kitchen utensils also include large and heavy furniture like refrigerator, kitchen cabinets etc. Keep in mind you have to disinfect all the equipments with repeated washings. Also look out for various insects and even snakes at every move. Check all the corners, drawers and cabinets beforehand for this purpose.
* The next step for flood damage cleanup consists of kitchen floor cleaning. You may use a solution of anti-bacterial detergent and bleach to mop the floor, walls, counters, doors, windows and other soaked areas.

* Now dry up everything - the utensils, equipments, floor, walls, windows, doors etc. Open the doors and windows for good air circulation. Put on the fans. You may also use dehumidifiers and air blower.

* Finally restore everything at its place, put on the heater and use some room-freshener to get your old cozy kitchen back after this compact flood damage cleanup.

Topics: Water, Damage, Restoration:, Let, The, Professionals, Do, It

There are plenty of reasons why your home could get flooded and it can happen no matter where you are and what kind of home you live in. You just can’t tell when a big storm will break out, when the plumbing will get busted, when the city’s sewage line will get clogged, or when a water problem in your home can suddenly break out.

Whatever the reason for the flood in your home, if the damage to your home and belongings is pretty bad, you should hire a water damage restoration company. A professional company can do the best job in clearing the flood water from your home and cleaning and sanitizing your abode so that it will be a safe place for you and your family. If the cost is making you think twice about hiring a water damage restoration company then just think of all the benefits that it will bring you.

The first benefit of course is how the water damage restoration company has all the equipment necessary to pump out the water from your home. This means there will be no need for you to purchase or rent a sump pump and a wet vacuum. You also don’t have to deal with removing the water yourself which could be troublesome if the flood water is several feet high. You can not remove water that high from your flooded basement or your home in one go. You can only remove two to three feet of water each day which means if there is six feet of flood water in you home, it will take you at least two days to clear the flood water from your home. That’s two days that you can use to spend time with your family, focus on your business, file for insurance claims and other important matters.

If the flood water brought in thick mud and silt then all the more reason you should hire a water damage restoration company. Shoveling dirt out and disposing debris takes a lot of hard work and can be physically exhausting. When you hire a water damage restoration company, you can just save your energy for getting your home and life back in order after the company has finished clearing the flood from your home and cleaning it.

A professional water damage restoration company can also save your home and your furniture from mold growth. They not only clear the flood water and clean your home they also make sure that there is no hidden moisture in your home to prevent the growth of mold. Sometimes even if you do a really good job of cleaning your home after a flood if you do not know where to look for hidden packets of moisture or water, you will end up having a mold problem several weeks after the flood.

So whatever the reason is for the flooding in your home, and even if hiring a water damage restoration company can cost you money, it is a practical choice when dealing with the flood in your home.

Topics: Flood, Damage, Cleanup, Tips, For, Your, Homes

Flood can cause a lot of damage to your home; from your furniture, electrical appliances to the over all structure of your house. This is why before you enter your houses after a flood, you have to follow a few flood damage cleanup techniques to effectively deal with any immediate and possible damages.

A flood damage cleanup entails you to quickly clean everything that may have been in contact with flood water and those situated directly above the standing water such as your ceiling. You may think that your ceiling will be the least of your problems, but humidity or vapor from the flood water can cause it to weaken. Aside from this, you also have to deal with your kitchen. It can be a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. There are cooking utensils, electrical appliances and storage places to deal with.

Safety: Your Top Priority

When you enter your house, be sure that you don’t touch any wet surfaces before turning off your main electrical switch. It is very dangerous to work in a wet environment since contact with wet electrical circuits results to electrical shock.

Secondly, you should check the durability of the foundations of your walls and ceilings. If you are not experienced or not a good judge of this, you may contact a professional contractor for an assessment on the amount of damage on your building.

Thirdly, take great care in using flood damage cleanup tools and chemicals. Keep your working area free from clutter. Specifically, keep tools with pointed or sharp edges away from your working area and footpaths. Also, be careful in using electrically powered tools and make sure they are designed for a flood damage cleanup.

And lastly, read the fine print on biocides or disinfectants that you plan to use in the cleanup. Never combine bleach with other biocides that contain ammonia. Use a pair of gloves and keep your hands away from your face. In addition, use a respirator and ventilate the room you’re working in to avoid suffocation.

Flood Damage Cleanup in Your Kitchen

Cleaning the kitchen is one of the time consuming and tedious tasks on your flood damage cleanup to-do list. The kitchen is where you cook food and it must be cleaned out properly so no health issues arise. To make the cleanup easier, empty cupboards and drawers first and gather all utensils in one place. Then start the flood damage cleanup up with cupboards and drawers. Every surface must be wiped clean with a disinfectant solution. However, make sure that the type of solution you use won’t damage your cupboard material.

Use the same solution for plastics, china and glass wares. Immerse them in the solution for at least ten minutes and air dry them. Never use a towel. On the other hand, silverwares, pots and pans should be disinfected by immersing them in boiling water for at least ten minutes. Never use biocides or bleach to disinfect them since these chemicals don’t work well with metals.

Topics: Why, Is, Water, Removal, Important?

Water is a running element that continues to seek lower ground and lower level. It usually carries with it a vast number of elements and organic materials as it runs its natural course. The buildup of water in a certain area usually happens after a natural calamity like a storm or heavy rains and flooding.

With the heavy rains and strong surges of water, most canal drainages and underground pipes cannot handle the volume of water hence, a reverse action occurs that sends the water back up the manhole or drainage holes in the basements of houses. Once this happens, water gathers in the confined space with no way out and damages everything it comes in contact with.

Water removal, is immediately required when a basement is flooded with backflows or effluent from the sewers. Aside from having to get appropriate cleaning apparel, it also requires the proper cleaning materials which must be used to make the water removal and cleaning more efficient and effective. Proper cleaning attire requires rubberized boots so you can tread water easily. The proper equipment needed is a submersible vacuum pump or a wet vacuum pump that could remove or reduce the water.

Start the water removal process by pumping the water out of the house or the basement. The main idea is to reduce the quantity of water in order to get access to the furniture, fixture and equipment. Start water removal from the highest point within the confined space until you get to the lower spaces. When the water has been adequately removed, tackle the movable items that you could bring out.

After water removal, it is time to take out all affected items from the basement and put them on higher ground that is dry, well away from water.

After you are through with removing the items, remove the carpet. If the carpet is tacked in or glued to the floor, get a sharp knife or scissors and cut it out to be able to remove it. Remember that the carpet should also undergo the water removal, cleaning and drying processes, along with all the other wet items. After having successfully taken out the carpet, clean, disinfect and dry the floor properly.

Cleaning the water damaged area requires brushing it with a soapy solution and rinsing it afterwards. After rinsing, apply a disinfecting solution that would help remove remaining pathogenic elements. The disinfectant will also aid in lessening the smell brought about by the contaminated water. Then dry by putting and turning on fans to circulate the stale air. If you have a dehumidifier turn it up so it would absorb the moisture within the basement.

While waiting for the basement area to dry up, start cleaning and sorting the items you brought up. Discard thoroughly damaged items, and clean and disinfect the ones that could still serve their purpose. Before restoring any item, properly assess whether it is worth the effort. The repair cost must be compensated with the service or original function with which the item was bought in the first place.

Topics: Water, Damage, Hazards, Can, Be, Prevented

Water damage is any damage done by water like floods, but could also be a domestic crisis. This could result in wetness or dampness of a room or particular items that helps the growth of moisture-related mold and mildew that are toxic and bring reactions such as immune disorders. Molds can also cause allergic reactions like headaches, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, chronic asthma, open sores, rashes and other skin allergies.

Water damage can bring about molds which are microscopic organisms that produce enzymes and digest organic matter to reproduce spores. Once the mold has settled in your home due to water damage, it would need moisture to begin growing.

To control mold, control the moisture indoors and prevent the harm that may be inflicted on your family. Check if there are hidden water leaks at home. It is always possible that you have one in your house.

In bathroom and kitchen, follow these simple steps:

1. Turn off all appliances that use water, and then check your water meter. After leaving it off for an hour, check again the water meter to see if the reading has changed. If the water meter reading changed then it is possible that there’s a leak. Refrigerators or freezers are the household appliances that may usually harbor some form of water damage.

2. Check underneath your dishwasher to see if the water pipes are not leaking. Next is the sink area under and on top of the counter.

3. In the bathroom, soft spots in the floors near the tub or shower, or any discoloration could signify that your tub or shower contains leaks. Of course, don’t forget to examine the toilet bowl as well.

4. Water damage may also be caused by a clog in your sink or bathroom. Most clogged drains can be easily cleared off by using items commonly found in the house such as a long stick or an unused piece of pipe. Better yet, use a declogging solution.

Here are the dos’ and don’ts when applying water damage restoration:

Do’s

*Remove the source of water leak if your capability permits. If not, have a professional do it. Remove the water which accumulated by mopping and blotting or sweeping it off.

* Keep the draperies off the wet carpet, by looping the bottom through a coat hanger, and placing the hanger on the drapery rod. Afterwards, remove wet area rugs or other floor coverings. Then, gather all wet fabrics and have them cleaned and dried thoroughly.

* Open all furniture drawers, closet doors, and luggage for better ventilation.

* Photos, paintings, and other art objects must be moved to a safe and dry place.

* Place damp books from shelves to a dry area; then spread them out to dry to avoid mold and mildew’s growth.

Don’ts

* Never use an ordinary household vacuum to remove water.

* Using electrical appliances while standing on wet carpet or wet floors may pose a danger of electrocution.

* Especially when you are not yet sure of the status of electricity, avoid going into rooms with standing water.

* Lifting carpet without professional help is also a no-no because doing so incorrectly could cause shrinkage.

When it comes to water damage, what you don’t know can hurt you. So there are many pointers given above for handling water damage and taking adequate care to avoid the risks that water damage can bring to you and your family.

Topics: Water, Restoration, Service:, Odor, And, Mold, Control

After the initial water pumping and clean up, odor and mold control is extremely essential to make the house fit to live in again. Mold removal is very important, as many people are allergic to mold. Water damage usually leaves a bad odor behind that is rather difficult to live with. The job of a water restoration service company is not completed till all odors and mould is removed.

You may find it difficult to even breathe properly till the odor is taken care of therefore water restoration service providers can provide you with a variety of options to control the odor. Most methods for odor control do not actually get rid of the smell but simply mask it. The four popular methods of odor control used by water restoration service companies are:

- Wet fogging: Wet fogging is a very effective method of masking a light odor. Wet fogging includes release of a deodorant in the form of fine mist, the fine mist can easily permeate all nooks and crannies where odors might be trapped. This method requires expert handling or it might leave a large amount of residue behind.
- Dry fogging: Dry fogging is also a very effective method and it is not as messy as wet fogging. Unlike wet fogging it does not leave behind residues and it has better circulation as well.
- Odor absorbing crystals: These crystals must be kept in different parts of the house after a water damage restoration, these crystals can absorb the odor and give out a pleasant smell instead.
- Ozone restoration: This is the only method that actually eliminates the smell instead of just masking it. Through this method you can convert odor into harmless water vapor and carbon dioxide. It is also effective against mildew and mold. Furniture, documents and other articles can be introduced in ozone chambers to remove foul odor.

Along with odor, mold is also a common occurrence after water damage therefore many water restoration service companies offer mold removal services as well. Mold is rather dangerous for infants as well as to people already suffering from respiratory ailments. It can cause respiratory problems as well. Proper cleaning and drying after water damage will ensure prevention of mold formation but mold will form if the air is moisture laden. Water restoration service providers use chemicals, sprayings as well as fogging for removing mold.

Killing the mold with chemicals is not enough, it has to be cleansed as well. A protective layer of fungicidal must be applied on the cleaned area to prevent reappearance of mold. It is best to call a professional water restoration service provider for this purpose since you would need to wear a lot of protective gear like gloves and masks before cleaning mold. Mold may also grow in crevices, which may not be easily visible to us but professional cleaners would be aware of possible places where mold could be found even if they are not visible and remove it effectively and efficiently.

Topics: Self-Help, For, Doing, Water, Damage, Restoration

Water is one of nature’s most destructive elements. As it finds its way to the lowest level, it carries with it a multitude of bacteria, pathogenic organisms and organic materials. Thus, when it enters your home and comes in contact with your properties it causes damage, which at times could be beyond repair.

When water has entered your house, you must act fast in order to save your furniture, fixture, equipment and appliances. However, if the water is several feet high, removing the items from the house would primarily require you to extract the water. Removing the water is the first step in water damage restoration. Using an ordinary vacuum is not recommended and you must get yourself a wet vacuum pump or a submersible vacuum pump that you could use to pump the water out.

Begin water extraction from high areas until you could remove it entirely or reduce it to a more tolerable level that would allow you to get access to the items inside your house. After the water has been successfully removed, take out all movable items like tables, chairs, television, etc. Put these items in another location which is high and dry. Immovable items such as nailed in cabinets should be emptied, with all its contents taken out.

When all the necessary items have already been removed or taken out, clean or surfaces with a warm soapy water solution, which is a mixture of warm water and powder or liquid detergent. Brush all the affected and damaged areas. If by any chance you have to clean out the entire house then do your water damage restoration cleaning by portions. Start from the inner portions of the house and do the outer portions that are near your exits or doors later. This is a more appropriate way of cleaning your home when performing water damage restoration because you will not be trekking dirt on an already clean portion (if you began the cleaning on the outer areas first).

After the brushing and cleaning, wash every surface with clean water and wipe dry excess water with clean cloth rags and floor mop. Apply a disinfecting solution of one-fourth cup chlorine bleach mixed with a gallon of water and let dry. Open all windows to allow air to come in and put in fans to circulate the stale air. If the external environment is sixty degrees, use a dehumidifier to absorb moisture and put back warm clean air.

Water damage restoration also entails the segregation of all items and movable possessions that were affected by the flood water. Those that you can used again must be cleaned up, disinfected and repaired to assume its pre-water damage restoration state, while others that were ruined beyond repair should be thrown away.

Most residential homeowners these days prefer to do water damage restoration by themselves since the cost of such repair or project is very costly especially if their respective insurance companies do not offer payments for such fortuitous events. While it’s true that experts should be hired to do efficient water damage restoration procedures, meticulously following the step-by-step process produces the same results and helps save on the expense of hiring others to do it for you.

Topics: Why, Do, You, Need, Water, Restoration, Service?

Water restoration service is the method of repairing damages made by water. These damages could be the resultant of flood, damp, leak or seepage. There are many provisions which help you avoid the hassles of hiring these services. But once damage strikes there is no way out but to look for providers. Their area of function is quite a wide one. It starts with water removal and ends with ensuring protection of the house from further damage.

As the first step of damage recovery process, you need to act fast. While water restoration service providers reach you, you should take immediate action so that the extent of damage could be minimized. It would enhance the possibility of restoration as well as lowering its cost.

Providers of this service offer quality output in water removal, water damage repair, mold removal and even document drying. Water restoration includes:

-Water Removal: Any kind of water restoration operation starts with pumping out the logged water. If the extent of accumulation is within control then a vacuum cleaner or sump pump can serve the purpose. But if it goes beyond reach, you need to call up professional water restoration service.

-Deodorization: Using techniques like wet fogging, dry fogging, crystals and ozone treatment mask and eliminate foul smell. These facilities can be availed from those agencies only which provide professional water restoration service.

-Dehumidifying and drying: This process dries up the unit and with the help of a dehumidifier the moisture in air is removed.

-Mildew and mold removal: For a long lasting result, you must hire professional water restoration service providers. They clean up the gradually developing mildews and mold with scientific technology like HEPA.

-Decontamination: The experts of water restoration service providing agencies decontaminate, clean and store the articles which are restorable and dispose which are not. This includes removal of loose contaminants, sound wave treatment of cleansing and disinfecting of possessions.

-Content restoration: This includes disinfecting, deodorizing and cleaning of draperies, clothing and even documents. Most of the articles are restored after the damage, but once legal papers, certificates or photographs get damaged, there is nothing that can be done. However, prompt water restoration service can do this part as well.

- Restoring the salvageable: Furnishing articles like sofa, carpets, beds, mattresses etc once wet can be restored if acted swiftly. They need immediate attention as mold, mildew and harmful microbes germinate fast in damp atmosphere.
However, till the professional team reaches and the task of damage recovery commences, you should do certain things beforehand. First thing that you must do is to disconnect electricity supply to the unit that needs restoration. If you are accompanying the person from water restoration service company, gear yourself properly with rubber gloves, boots, glasses etc. Also, if there is any wound in your body, cover it well. Exposing it to harmful micro organism would aggravate the injury and healing time. So, with a quality water restoration service you can ensure well being of your family as well as all your belongings.

There is an old saying that goes, “an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.” But still a lot of people are not learning their lessons. Immediate action should be done to lessen the damage brought about by water. The first thing to do is to arrest excess water and moisture to avoid further water damage. Drying the house and furniture is not enough. Continued moisture in a once-flooded room may cause the appearance and growth of molds and mildew. And these molds will not only damage your personal items but will jeopardize your health as well. The best way to control molds is through humidity control. Understanding what causes molds can prevent you from water damage.

Humidity in the air rises as water vapor increases. The ideal water humidity is about 30% to 50% to avoid water damage. Moisture is caused by leaky or burst pipes, overflowing sinks, dishwashers, washing machines and anything that deals with water. The best way to prevent high levels of humidity is by finding the source of moisture.

Check washing machine hoses, water heater, refrigerator faucet and pipes regularly. Since pipes and plumbing are usually installed through walls, you will need to be very observant to the appearance of stains in the flooring, walls and ceiling. These could be signs of plumbing problems. Should you notice any defects, have these fixed immediately to avoid bigger problems. Humidity can also come from the outside through the air that enters your doors and windows.

Doors and windows should fit properly within their frames. Once there are water stains present on your door and windows, it means that there’s a leak that should be taken care of. Water coming in from these leaks can cause the woods to rot.

Regularly check the filter of air conditioner. Make sure that filters are not clogged. The water from air condenser should not flow back to the house. An exhaust fan ventilates the bathroom by circulating air and preventing damp overload. You can also use it to prevent excess water build up.

If you suspect that moisture is already building up inside your home, you can remove this by heating your home. Turn on the heater to about 80F temperature to blow away the moisture out of your furniture. Turn the air conditioner on after heating. Start with low setting around 60F for about two hours and then put it on normal settings. Do the process several times until desired humidity is reached.

These are basic tips to prevent water damage in the home. Proper maintenance and preventive action can reduce further water damage. Devoting a little of your time for a routine check up will save you a lot of time and effort in the future. Always keep in mind that small problems can lead to bigger ones. So before this happens, you need to act fast. Be more cautious. Act now and save yourself from future loses. Save your home. Save your health.

Being a victim of flood is never easy because it needs immediate attention, causes stress and requires a decent amount of money if the property damaged was not properly insured. The next best thing to do is take it upon yourself to remedy the situation as best as you can.

A water damage restoration remediation activity needs the following: removal of water, cleaning and disinfecting, drying and restoration. Each part of the process is significant to the other because if the previous step was not properly done then it also affects the effectiveness of the following procedure.

The first phase of water damage restoration calls for removing the water. You can do this by using a submersible vacuum pump or a wet vacuum pump. Make sure that the main electrical switch within the house has been turned off before tackling the water to avoid any accidents since electricity and water do not mix. Extract water from high vantage points to allow you to get to the lower areas. Continue pumping out water until you have removed most of it. This would allow you to get and bring out the necessary things and items that were likewise contaminated by the dirty flood water.

When you have cleared all the water, bring out all the equipment, appliances, furniture and fixture from the affected area. This will enable you to efficiently clean all the affected surfaces. Remove wall-to-wall carpets by rolling it and taking it outside. If mud is present then you will need shovels and a wheelbarrow to take out the mud before you can start cleaning with soap and water.

Upon being able to remove every necessary item, start the main water damage restoration process by brushing all areas and surfaces with warm soapy water. If you cannot do the whole area at once then start with the inner and upper portions first to make your cleaning more steady and easy. Then properly rinse everything by using a garden hose spray to clear out the soap and dirt residues left by the scrubbing. When everything has been completely rinsed out, dry all surfaces with clean cloth rags while using a mop for the floor. After you have done this apply a disinfectant. You could either make your own mixture out of 2 ounces of chlorine bleach mixed with one gallon of water; or you could use a commercial disinfectant - just follow the directions on the label.

After disinfecting the area is the drying process of a water damage restoration procedure. All air vents, windows and air passage ways must be opened to circulate the air. Turn on fans and dehumidifiers to accelerate the drying process. Drying requires a number of days which could take up to one week or more.

Upon having finished cleaning the area affected by the flood and waiting for it to dry; the water damage restoration entails the separation of the usable items and the thoroughly damaged ones. The equipment, furniture or fixture that could still be used must be properly cleaned, disinfected and dried. It is very important to remember that the main objective of a water damage restoration procedure is to dry everything out and repair them back to their previous undamaged state. It is also suggested that before doing any water damage restoration activity, you must determined to take on the difficult task and must follow the process meticulously to achieve the results you desire.

They are just about everywhere. And there is no telling when they will appear or where they are going. You can find them down in the basement, or in the bathroom. They just love to hangout in those warm, moisture-laden places, settling down and inviting their own kind in order to build their own community. Like any typical unlawful tenant, they just arrive without any warning whatsoever.

Yes, molds are like that. They have the habit of just being there without being invited. Molds can be likened to home crashers who plague some or many parts of your house, especially the kitchen, the bathroom or any place that has high moisture content due to the presence of water. Maybe you forgot to fix the leaky pipe, or you still haven’t gotten around to sealing the cracks on the bathroom walls or the gutter has sprouted new holes because it is aged. No matter what the reason is, the molds are there and its time to implement mold removal procedures.

Mold removal activity is a challenging procedure that a homeowner undergoes at one point in his life. Molds are hard to remove, particularly because they leave stains and seep deeply into materials when they are left unnoticed. But before engaging in any mold removal process, be sure to have all the necessary equipment and attire to fight off the molds.

First of all you have to get yourself goggles, face mask and elbow length gloves. The goggles must be used because the mold spores will irritate the eyes and could make it sore red - so just to be on the safe side, wear goggles. A face mask is also needed to cover your nose and mouth and avoid the direct entry of dust and mold spores into your respiratory system. Entry of mold spores from this point could trigger asthma, cough, sneezing and other forms of respiratory allergies and sickness. Wear gloves and long sleeved work shirts since these items will protect you from the dust and molds which may cause rashes or itching. Remember; do not take the effect of molds on the human health lightly because they are very hazardous. And if you prefer to do mold removal from your house yourself, then employ means to protect yourself.

Aside from wearing the correct cleaning attire, the mold removal process requires you to have a brush, soap, water, rags and bleach. Brush the area where the molds are present and rinse it thoroughly afterwards. Apply the bleach directly to remove any stains. Let it stand for some time before rinsing the bleach with clean water. If the mold stains are still present apply bleach a second time. If you have any mold removal chemical, you could also use this instead of bleach. Make sure to apply as per manufacturer’s instruction for it to be effective. The application normally is done more than twice or thrice until the mold stain is no longer visible.

In general, molds do reappear after sometime. When this happens, the mold removal procedure to be done is to remove the wood, tile or wall paper the molds have reappeared on and change it entirely. This usually solves the problem of reappearing molds.

Floods are among the most common natural disasters that has affected the world. Flood causes great damage to both lives and property. In spite of regular efforts that have been taken by the federal and local government, flood damage has been increasing year after year. To guarantee the proper flood damage cleanup measures, appropriate review is required in order to ensure that the policy makers and the researchers are able to overcome the problems caused by floods.

Dampness and humidity inhabiting into almost everything is the biggest problem that each flood victim faces. The accumulated water in the house becomes the breeding ground for virus and other foreign agents. Even a major part of household things require to be changed immediately. Flood damage causes moisture creating pollutants which can cause major health problems. Expelling these pollutants and moisture from your home is among the most important things included in the flood damage cleanup.

Perishable products or any food and paper products should be discarded immediately. This is the first step towards flood damage cleanup. A dehumidifier should be used to dry out the moisture. Also, boiled water should be used for drinking and washing purposes. The effective cleaning of water is of utmost importance. The dishes and household appliances should be washed properly before using them again.

It might take months for the complete flood damage cleanup procedure, but steps have to be taken immediately to cut out the severe health problems and prevent further damager to the house structure.

The air we breathe gets contaminated with pollutants due to floods. This is another major cause of health problem during flood. Thus measures also have to be implemented ensure that the air inside and around the place is free from these viral agents.

The most difficult part about the flood damage cleanup is to decide where to start the cleanup from. Almost everything gets damaged due to flood. Be it the carpets, furniture, floor or the dishes. There are many websites available that provide detailed information on conducting a flood damage cleanup. Following these steps would ensure the proper cleaning procedure after a flood. Professional expertise on the flood damage cleanup can also be contacted. These professionals access the damage and take the remedial action immediately. They would ensure that the proper flood damage cleanup procedure is followed. One can easily find the contact information of a professional either on the internet or in the local yellow pages.

One of the popular processes being employed in the flood damage cleanup is the structural drying. It is an exceptional process of drying and reduces the risk of any viral agents. This process helps to restore the home and the property very quickly. Following this process saves a lot of time and money and you can be completely sure about the verification of the process. This process doesn’t even require the carpets to be rolled up. The decisions are based on the building material. Hence be sure to contact the professional firm which employs structural drying for the cleaning up of the flood damage. Also be sure to do a bit of research before finalizing on the company to hire.

Topics: Flood, Damage, Cleanup:, Did, You, Know, These, Things?

Flood damage cleanup is one tiring job after a flood. Things need to be done to restore your properties and so you can move on with your life. But you need to be more aware of the risks associated in doing flood damage cleanup. These risks not only pertain to accidents that may occur during a flood damage cleanup but also risks on the health of the one who’s doing the process.

The effect of flood damage can be serious depending on the volume of floodwater. You have to check the structural stability of your home. An important aspect of the house to be checked is the stability of walls or concrete, as these might collapse since flood can weaken these structures. You may also want to check the bulging of ceilings; this too may collapse anytime if it is still holding water. For safety reasons, you need to make sure that these parts are still structurally stable before flood damage cleanup can begin.

Flood damage can be hazardous not only to your home but also to your health. That is why it is very important to perform flood damage cleanup as soon as possible. It is understood that after the flood, unwanted waters are everywhere. It is not enough to clean up water that can be seen by the eyes. Water in vapor form or high levels of humidity in an enclosed are should also be given attention. These are the main source of molds which may cause you and your family some health hazards like allergic reactions, difficulty of breathing, or skin rashes. Floodwaters can also be contaminated with viruses and chemicals that can be dangerous to your health.

There are also some diseases one can get from flood. Leptospirosis, is a bacterial infection caused by bacterium called leptospira that usually comes from rats and wild animals. When doing flood damage cleanup, it will be unwise to step on water that came from overflowing canals (where rats live) without wearing protective gear like rubber boots.

Indirect diseases caused by flood are also possible after the event. These include tetanus and food poisoning just to name a few. So it is strongly recommended to sanitize kitchen utensils and check the pipes of your water system to see if they need some repair during flood damage cleanup. Reptiles can be carried into your house by floodwaters so you also need to be more cautious of their possible presence.

These are some risks that need to be given attention before doing a flood damage cleanup. Listed below is a protective gear checklist that you have to wear before doing a flood damage cleanup.

1. Gloves - These will help you from getting cut from debris or broken glasses. It will also help you avoid getting direct contact with contaminated water or chemicals.

2. Rubber boots - Just like gloves, this will prevent you from getting cut. Protective footwear can also keep your feet from being exposed to contaminated water and chemicals. These can also protect you from reptiles or rodents that may have entered your house due to flood.

3. Splash Goggles - This will prevent your eyes from getting irritated from contaminated water.

4. Face Mask - Due to the possibility of chemicals being accidentally brought in or released into your home, it is advisable to wear face mask to avoid inhaling dangerous substances.

Topics: Mold, Removal:, Easy, Steps, To, Prevent, The, Occurrence, Of, Molds

Molds are fungi that develop in areas where the air is laden with excess moisture and there is not much of sunlight. Lack of proper ventilation in certain corners of your home propels the growth of molds. Keeping your indoor environment clean and maximum exposure to sunlight helps in mold removal. It is comparatively easy to detect the presence of molds in your home. It is not only harmful for your furniture but is also the root of several health problems like allergies, fungal infections and asthma.

The first prerequisite of mold removal is to get rid of the excess moisture content in your homes. Mold grows from microscopic spores. You can determine the growth of mold by careful observation of the affected spots. Such areas have an earthy smell and are discolored. The areas most likely to be affected by mold are floors covered with carpets and cabinets.
Following a few simple steps can complete the process of mold removal. The first step in the case of mold removal is to prevent the growth of moisture. Some parts of our homes do not get adequate sunlight and therefore have more moisture. Moisture content is high in cases where there is poor venting of domestic appliances like stoves and dryers, leaked roofs and plumbing lines, overflow of water from toilets and sinks and increased use of humidifiers. Maintaining a low humidity level at your home can control the growth of molds. Maintaining a humidity level of 60% during the summers and 30-50% during the winters helps in minimizing the growth of molds.

There are different ways of mold removal from different objects. Before taking up mold removal, one should wear protective gear to avoid any form of contact or exposure. If mold settles on wooden items, tiles and carpet, it best to discard them. Carpets treatments can do away with molds. Clothes stacked away in a corner of your closet are affected by molds. Mold removal from clothes can be achieved simply by washing them with a good detergent followed by sun drying.

Mold accumulation on books and paper can be dusted off and wiped away with a clean cloth. Molds flourish on objects that are wet. In case your home has been flooded, you need to adopt means to dry your furniture and other belongings. The application of disinfectants after drying helps to keep them mold free. The disinfectants should be sprayed and then allowed to dry for sometime. There should be proper ventilation in places where you apply disinfectants as the strong stench can cause respiratory problems.
After completing the process of mold removal, it is necessary to brush up the cleared surface with a fungicidal coating. This coating prevents the reappearance of mold on the surface. In order to secure a mold free home, you need to maintain the mold removal process quite often. You should inspect the exterior and interior of your home regularly, to see that there is no area affected with molds.
