There are many things that need to be done after a flood to prevent water damage. If this water is left sitting for days, the damage might be too bad. In most cases like this, you might be able to save about half of the items that you would have been able to save if you had been able to get in the area sooner.
There are many things that you will need to use in your job of cleaning up this mess. You will need to have plenty of rags or paper towels, trash bags, cleaning supplies, rope, and even a hand held hair dryer, and a shop vac to help with the removal of all the left over water.
Once you are allowed to get into the area to clean, you will to start by going through everything that can be salvaged. This in itself can be time consuming and the most awful time you can be made to go through because you will find that you won’t be able to save most of your beautiful things. After this is done, you will then have the job of cleaning up the rest. If your home is still standing, you will have to use the shop vac to try to remove the water and mud from your carpets. This will probably take some time because it could have more water and mud in some places more than others.
All of the stuff that can’t be saved you will need the trash bags for and depending on how much stuff you had, you might need a lot of them. You will probably need to borrow a friend or neighbor’s truck to remove all of the trash and be prepared to have more than one trip.
You will need the paper towels and the rags to clean off the walls, counter tops, and some of your furniture if it is still in the home. You will need to put up the rope between trees to hang items, such as clothes, curtains, and bedding. The hand held blow dryer will be used to help in the drying of some of the smaller things like pictures and other paper items.
This process will probably take you more than one day, so just take your time and try to do the best job to make sure that you can keep the items that you have left.
